Henty Dunes II
The Henty Dunes are a very large dune field on the northern end of Ocean Beach on Tasmania's west coast. The dunes are fed with sand mainly from Macquarie Harbour to the south and the Henty Rivers that flow in from the north. The constant west sou-west of the Roaring Forties off the Southern Ocean (in the distance) have generated a significant dune-scape here since the end of the Pleistocene Ice Age. These ancient dunes are so well established that small rainforest habitats have appeared on them. Towards the northern end of the dunes, the preserved footprints or ichnofossils of Australian mega-fauna can be found in some secret between-dune depressions while the footprints of contemporary birds and wildlife surround active soaks. Thompson (Ron Haug personal communication) Launched 22nd February 1871 Registered: 2nd March 1871. Sydney No.8 of 1871 Length: 63.3 ft Breadth: 18.3 ft Depth in Hold: 6.2 ft Tonnage: (n.b. 1 shipping ton = 100 cubic feet) Gross (underdeck): 38.43 tons Hatch: 0.66 tons Net: 39.09 tons or 110.6 cubic metres Re-registered: 29th September 1877, Sydney No.67 of 1877 Note: In 1880, Net tonnage was increased to 42.19 tons (119.4 cu. m.) He called it Martha Cottage, after his wife. He was the grandfather of Sir A. Roden Cutler, V.C. [also Governor of NSW] My father [Richard Cooke Cutler] at this time had founded a flourishing business as Produce Merchant and Common Agent in Sussex Street, and somewhere in Erskine Street, called Cutler and Co. He owned three ships. I think they called them schooner-built yachts. He traded with the Northern Rivers, Kempsey, Port Macquarie, and other places. Their names were Clara Crawford, Empress of India, and Lightning.” OPERATION ALONG THE NSW COAST From 1871 to 1880 the Clara Crawford conveyed a range of cargoes along the NSW North Coast. Items carried included timber, palings, maize, red cedar, sides of bacon, hides and eggs. Her main port was the Manning River and, on numerous occasions, was unable to cross the bar at the Manning entrance. The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 – 1954) - Friday 29 October 1880 OPERATION UNDER BURNS PHILP In the history of the QBE Insurance Group the following extract of a letter from Burns to Philp was noted: Almost casually he (James Burns) mentioned another venture: “Bought Clara Crawford. Now heading for Normanton in charge of Capt. Cathro who was Capt of Elsea which went on exploring expeditions with a private gentleman named White from Adelaide. They visited many islands and places about New Guinea and Cathro asserts that he found a good bank of shell and can procure a large quantity in a very short time. The Telegraph (Brisbane, Qld. : 1872 - 1947) - Tuesday 16 December 1884 The date of the demise of the Clara Crawford is unknown but it may have been any time from very late 1884 on. She was operating as a lighter from December 1883. The last note on the Register reads: “Foundered at Normanton, Queensland and wreck blown up.
